John Galliano’s Artisanal Collection for Maison Margiela brings together the delicacy of 1930s Paris with the depression of the era. Working with Pat McGrath, a renowned makeup artist with her line Pat McGrath Labs, the duo bring forth a couture collection that unsettles the viewer and an element of fantasy arises. The pair began their reign in the late 90s and early 2000s, working on collections for Dior. From this, Galliano won the title of Creative Director at LVMH's Christian Dior in 1996. McGrath’s first step to notoriety was her crystallized lip look for Dior, once again, in the 90s. She continues to push the boundaries of makeup and design, weakening the pieces together. Her looks are extensions of Galliano’s couture pieces, truly allowing the vision to take full force.

McGrath’s glass skin look is reminiscent of porcelain dolls. The meticulously chosen models each held a unique walk that was in character for their assigned piece from Galliano. With long struts and flayed hands, the models appeared to be stepping on air, fragility landing their steps in a broken formation. The drama of the catwalk curated the vintage-inspired pieces and surprised the audience.

From the success of the SS24 collection, social media makeup artists have been aiming to recreate McGrath’s iconic look. McGrath explains that her look was a combination of multiple gel masks and water. Instead, she announces she is releasing a product for the porcelain skin in the coming months to make her look more accessible for influencers.
